Nova Atlantis Foundation (www.nova-atlantis.org) is a research institute, based on Pico island, at the Azores. By conducting scientific research, the foundation aims to provide information on the status of the cetaceans of Azores and their habitat.
Whereas a big part of our job is collecting data in the field, the ultimate purpose is to publish our findings in peer reviewed scientifc journals. We believe that through science we can enhance knowledge and help to conserve and protect the marine environment and its inhabitants.
Therefore today constituted a big milestone, with the announcement that 33 new IMMAs (Important Marine Mammal Areas) have been recognised, and one of them is the NE Atlantic Ocean! In May 2023 we were invited by the NE Atlantic IMMA committee to add data during the proposal evaluation process, and we could use the Risso’s dolphin as a key species to indicate the importance of the area.
Based on our previous publications we could deliver “proof” that Risso’s dolphins are resident in the Azores, and that females use the coastal waters for nursing and calving. Also, we are dealing with an almost closed genetic population structure and Azorean Risso’s dolphins display distinct social behaviour. The IMMA status is an important step towards the conservation and protection of this unique European marine habitat, and our uninterrupted 24 years of fieldwork have made a meaningful contribution! ...
